Frequently Asked Questions:
A: Users of the PDX can interact in 2 ways; either in the Chat rooms for the project (see the FAQ on Chatting) or by posting answers to questions posed by project leaders or members in the Discussion Forum. The Discussion Forum can be found by putting the cursor on the word Communicate that can be found on the blue tool bar that is seen once you enter a project. When the cursor is over this word, a pull-down menu appears with the following options: Discussion Forum, Chat, Email Group. By clicking once on Discussion Forum, you will be taken immediately to the webpage where questions, which are links (blue and underlined) have been posted by leaders or members. To answer a question, click once on it and you will see the question itself, any answers other members have posted and a button with "Contribute an Answer" at the very bottom of any answers that have been posted (you must 'scroll down' to see the Contribute button if there a lots of answers posted to the question). Clicking on this button will take you to a screen where you will see the question repeated again, a response title already inserted for you, and a blank box into which you may type your answer. After typing your answer, scroll down to the bottom of the webpage and you will see the 'Submit' button. Click on this button once and you will have an opportunity to proofread your answer before you actually submit it. If you wish to make changes, hit the 'Back' button on your browser and make your changes to the text you typed in the box. If you do not wish to make any changes, hit the 'Confirm' button. IF YOU FAIL TO HIT THE CONFIRM BUTTON, YOUR ANSWER WILL BE LOST. To check that an answer was submitted, go back to the Discussion Forum, click on the question for which you submitted an answer, and scroll down to see your submission.
A: The Discussion Forum is 'static'. Questions can be posted on course readings, topics, or issues by project leaders and/or members and participants can be given a certain time limit (example: 1 week) to consider the question and post an answer. The questions posted should be open-ended and complex, requiring participants to think, reflect, and engage in mental problem solving in order to answer them. Answers in the Discussion Forum should not focus too much on form; they should be considered to be forms of journal entries and should focus more on the quality of thought rather than the form of the answer.
